For those students who are learning English as a second language and may speak another language at home, there are support services provided on a daily basis at Vineland PreK-8. These are the services:
Separate small group tutoring (pull-out): Students are provided tutoring through the use of a second language curriculum (The IDEAS kit) that supports the acquisition of the English language in the context of reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills. Students work in small groups of 2 -4 students normally and they are offered individual assistance specific to their needs. This tutoring occurs daily, then students are returned to the classroom.
In classroom support: Students nearly fluent in English who are performing fairly satisfactorily in the classroom may still need some assistance to improve their skill level and perform at grade level. They are offered support directly in the classroom through collaboration with the classroom teacher. A co-teaching model is used where possible so students can obtain assistance completing assignments in the content areas, especially science and social studies, where the academic vocabulary is more
demanding.
English Enrichment classes: Students in middle school classes are scheduled to attend classes that provide special techniques for supporting their learning in all content areas in the English language. The focus is on reading, writing, listening, and speaking English through the use of supplemental materials and thematic units designed to focus on the more challenging aspects of the language. Students are provided instruction on all levels of English acquisition until they achieve the fluent-advanced score on the state examination CELA Proficiency Test.
