Welcome to Our Band's Website

We have a great band program at Vineland. Band at Vineland is fun as well as educational. Students learn to read music, play instruments, and give concerts.

Our band are divided by grade level.

Class Schedule:

6th Grade Band 12:09-1:07

The Sixth Grade Band is our beginning band at VMS. Students can come in with no experience in music. They will learn to read music and learn the fundamentals of playing whichever instrument they choose. We develop a sense of teamwork as we learn to play together. The students' progress is amazingly quick and they can play tunes together in no time.

In most cases students will need to supply their own instrument, however we do have a few "school instruments". The method book used is Standard of Excellence Book I.

7th Grade Band 1:10-2:08

The 7th Grade Band is an intermediate band. The members have one year of experience on their instrument, although in some cases 7th graders who have not been in band before may begin to play a new instrument. Students in 7th grade band continue their musical education with a variety of activities including large group, and solo and ensemble experiences. The method book used is Standard of Excellence Book II.

8th Grade Band 2:11-3:10

The 8th Grade Band is an advanced band. Most members have two years of experience on their instrument. Students in 8th grade band continue their musical education with a variety of activities including large group, and solo and ensemble experiences. The method book used is Standard of Excellence Book II.

Personal Information

Mr. Emery received his Bachelor of Music Education from the University of Northern Colorado in 1982. He began his professional career in Haxtun, Colorado teaching band. Mr. Emery taught in Haxtun for one year, the moved to Antonito, Colorado where he also spent one year. In 1984 Mr. Emery began teaching in District #70 in Pueblo. In District #70, Mr. Emery has taught at Vineland Elementary, South Mesa Elementary, Excelsior Middle School, Vineland Middle School and Pueblo County High School. Mr. Emery now only teaches at Vineland and Pueblo County and has enjoyed 23 successful years at both schools.

Class Expectations

The most important aspect of success in band at Vineland is home practice! Each student is required to hand in a practice record every week. This record should be signed by parents.

Weekly playing test will record the progress of students. Band members' grades will be calculated by the average of home practice records grades and playing test grades.

Attendance at Band Concerts is required and will be part of the students' grades.
